What flames are made of

"PHOTON EMISSIONS"
Flames are seen out of matters photon emissions that are energy packets (waves) released by a product (reaction) of changing states of matters forms.

When something burns or changes states of chemical bonds due to a reaction, such as gas being ignited on your stove. It changes its molecular composition by releasing a form of energy, that is commonly referred to as photons and other radiation that is of lesser power called infrared or heat.

Variations of color are due do the energy of the wave forms.
Red light is of lower energy in photon emissions per unit of time emitting from its source.

Yellow would be much more powerful than red due to the emissions being more rapid (energetic)being more waves in the same time.

An interesting note I shall add; Flames are mot matter they are radiation they are produced by matters transition to other states of macroscopic forms. It is only energy being released that you become aware of by its radiant forces propagating through the air.

I will add that we would not see anything, without the aid of the air as photons take more time to interact through the air. You see they do travel at the speed of 300 thousand meters per second yet through the molecules of the air 'they', (in a sense like pool balls) transfer the energy - from molecule to molecule and this transfer takes time, not much - but its just enough to slow it down enough for your senses to become aware of its nature.

Light travels (propagates) at about half the speed through 'diamond' as a result of its density.

You could not see the sun nor the stars without the air. It is our haven and this is also where the power to burn comes from in reactions that take place in its medium.

The gas provides a material (mostly carbon) that gases such as oxygen combine with to form 'chemical bonds' that allow a lower state (potential energy) for the air to fall to.

This process releases energy. That is what flames are [caused] by.

Another interesting thing is that all the matter being the atoms are still there - just in new states / forms.
