I was so sure I'd love being able to sleep in until 10:00, go to class at 11, saunter to lunch at 12:30, go back to class at 2:00, and be done around 4. Having classes split up allowed another thing to happen that I was quite thankful for: activities could be planned at any time of the day. This freedom (combined with the fact that my campus has over 800 student organizations) made me feel more free than at any time in high school or before.
Yet, if I might adjust the Spiderman quotation: "With great freedom comes great responsibilities."

It is critical to have a daily planner because although there is still something of a routine in college (after all, you should know when your classes meet and that should stay stable), you still must account for activities that only happen once or activities that have dynamic time schedules.
The benefits of a day planner, then, are mostly logical. They allow you to avoid overbooking your own life; you can easily see if you are available to going out to dinner with friends on one day or unavailable due to a study party with your chemistry class (which, if you are in chemistry, you'd probably do best to plan several of those.) A day planner also allows you to make structure from chaos in an arbitrary way. Even if you don't have something specific to do at a given time, that may not mean you are free to do anything. Some free time should be set aside for homework and studying (as each class requires,) and although sometimes these things can be procrastinated or forgone, a daily planner can be invaluable in regimenting yourself so that bad test scores don't force you to clean up your act.
