The best way to prepare for a hurricane is to run away. Seriously, you cannot prevail against high winds, rain and storm surge. You can try to board up your windows, if you have time and can find boards. This time is probably better spent in driving somewhere out of the path of the impending hurricane.
You might want to have a supply of non-perishable foods, blankets and flashlights and batteries ready somewhere in your house in the event of a major storm. This will save you time when you are fleeing. When it becomes clear from the weather reports that a hurricane will make groundfall in your area, turn off the power, pack up your family, lock up your house, load everyone and your pets into the car, and start driving. You will want to get as far inland and to as high ground as possible as soon as possible. If you leave early you will avoid traffic jams and the possibility of getting caught in a flood in your car.
When a hurricane strikes, the forces of nature can reduce your home to a pile of rubble in nothing flat. Even two years after Katrina New Orleans is still largely destroyed. If a major storm is coming you must secure your home as best as possible and seek refuge somewhere else. If you stay in your home it is possible you will be injured or worse. You cannot fight a hurricane, but you have the power to avoid one with the wonders of modern weather reporting. Stay aware and keep safe.
