Several people, including my children, have asked me "why do you have so many vinyl records?". My answer has always been the same..." you wouldn't understand until you listen to a vinyl record through modern headphones or through a tube amplifier with modern speakers."
There is a certain warmth in the sound of vinyl, and valve or tube amplifiers, that is lost in a digital recording played through a solid state amplifier. It may just be a sentimental attachment to the sound of my youth, but that is the number one reason I collect vinyl.
The second reason I collect vinyl is this... There are albums from the past that will never see digital reproduction. These are the albums that I pay the most for. They are the "rarely heard of" musicians that left an impression on myself and the music style that I play. The songs that never got any air time because they were not the "main stream" music at the time they were recorded. I love to share music, from my vinyl collection, with another musician or music lover. The smile and nod of approval on their face is priceless.
I guess the answer to "Who is keeping vinyl alive and why" is... people like me. That person that got old, but never grew up, and still has an attachment to the way things were. I am keeping vinyl alive and I look forward to buying the records of the people who do not understand. If everyone loved vinyl, it would cost me a lot more money to acquire the collection I have and the ones I don't have yet. I look forward to seeing you doubters at your yard sale. I will be the one buying all of your records.
