Just as Heaven is a real place, Hell is also a real place. Hell is a place that was created for Satan and his angels. It was not created for us at all, and God never wanted any of us to go there. Unfortunately, those who do not believe in and accept Christ's payment for our sins will go there some day. You will not go there because God is bad or because you were bad. You will go there because you turned your back on the salvation God offered through His Son, Jesus Christ.
When sin entered into the world, God knew he would have to make a way for us to avoid our deserved destination. His plan was to send his son to pay for our sins. Wow, it's so amazing to be loved that much even when I don't deserve it. Something like how I love my own children: no matter what they do. I may not always be proud of their actions, but I love them and would give my life for them.
Jesus Christ came to earth, lived and ministered, and allowed himself to be hung on a cross, even though he had done nothing wrong. You see, God cannot be in the presence of sin, and we are all sinners. Whether we miss the mark by an inch or a mile, we missed the mark. Someone had to pay for our sins, and that someone had to be the perfect sacrifice. We could not do it because we are not perfect. Jesus could and did. He did his part, now we have to do ours. He stands there with a bill that says paid in full on it, and we have to accept it. He never forces us to choose Him, but he did everything he could so that we could choose Him.
He prepared a place for those who would accept this payment called Heaven. For those who do not accept Him, there is no recourse but to send us to Hell. God weeps every time someone dies without accepting His forgiveness. He loves us and wants a relationship with all of us, but because He is a holy God, He cannot accept us in our sin. He gave us a way out, but we have to choose it. So, does the thought of Hell deter evil-doers? Sometimes, it probably does, but many times, people go right on doing 'bad things' even though they have heard about Hell, even some that believe in it. Whether we believe it or not, Hell is very real, and I hope no one will choose to go there when there is a very real way out.
