I love my Heavy Putter(TM) and my wife, in that order. I have the center-shafted, mallet style. Putter, not wife. I picked up the B-1 M model at my local PGA Tour Superstore for about $200. Before now, I would never have paid that kind of money for a putter. I figured either you could putt or you couldn't, but either way it wasn't the club's fault. Boy was I wrong. The moment I touched the Heavy Putter(TM), the roof of the store opened up, a brilliant beam of light shown down, and a choir of angels began to sing. Okay, maybe not, but with just a few practice strokes, I knew this was the one. I had never held a putter that felt so right.
I stroked a few practice putts on the indoor green with good results and zoomed home to tell my wife I'd picked out my Father's Day gift, somehow forgetting to mention the price. She was just happy that she didn't have to haul the kids around the mall looking at men's shirts. Being an impatient sort, I bought it a week before Father's Day and took it straight to the practice green of the nearest golf course. I spent the next two days getting to know my new love, cultivating our relationship until I felt like we were one. The following weekend we headed onto the course for our first real date.
I've always had trouble with short putts. I could make a six-footer pretty easily, but put me at half that distance and I choke. Well, not any longer. My new putter immediately improved this area of my game. I started rolling more putts home right from the start. My playing partner started calling me "Deadeye."
Since buying my Heavy Putter(TM), I've played about 20 rounds of golf. The first week I dropped two strokes from my average number of putts per round. Since then, my average number of putts per round has dropped by about four. This past weekend, I finished my round with only thirty putts. After watching me sink my third 20-footer for the day, my playing partner muttered, "Well, I guess you got your 200 dollars worth."
After testing the Heavy Putter(TM) in the store, but before buying it, I read some of the reviews of it. Many were as enthusiastic as I am about it. The ones that weren't appreciative of it usually admitted that it helped with short putts, but felt that the weight of the club made it harder to lag long putts close. My experience has been just the opposite. Because it contributes to a smooth, rhythmic stroke, I'm better able to judge the distance the ball will roll, and my scores over the last few months prove it.
You probably want the technical specifications of the Heavy Putter(TM) to balance out this love story. Well, according to the Heavy Putter(TM) website, www.heavyputter.com, a heavier putter head disengages the small wrist muscles and engages the larger shoulder muscles to promote a pendulum stroke and a more consistent swing path, so the head of the Heavy Putter(TM) weighs about 100 grams more than a conventional putter head. In addition, their "Weight Management System" (WMS) shifts the putter's balance point 75 percent higher by inserting a 250-gram weight inside the upper shaft to further prevent wrist breakdown. It also comes with an optional set of tip weights to adjust the heel and toe weight to customize the balance for the golfer. The Heavy Putter(TM) comes in twelve different models and a variety of lengths.
The Heavy Putter(TM) probably isn't for everyone, but it might be for you. Give it a try next time you're in your favorite golf establishment. But be careful, you might fall in love.
