Spelling, punctuation, grammatical and just plain strange errors we see consistently made on the internet.
These errors are important in a professional sense. Of utmost grammatical importance would be resumes, books, essays, news (which also makes many errors these days!) and magazine articles.
However, from the little smiley faces to misspellings, typos to new and relatively strange words, I would much prefer that a person get across "meaning" than be afraid of being chastised for errors.
For quite some time, I thought that "lol" meant, "Lot's of love", then learned it was "laughing out loud"; it is like learning a foreign language. Moreover, "emoticons", they can be somewhat cute sometimes.
Sometimes, emoticons can even be somewhat necessary. Reading from someone can be a lot different from speaking with them, and often, emotions as smiling and laughing do not come across in writing. People often take things written much too seriously when these things are meant as joking or just fun.
A smiley face or "lol" can make all the difference in such situations. Reminiscent of those school-days notes passed behind the teachers back. Feelings are much more easily hurt without them. I believe, that on the internet, these are good things to have around.
Anyone who reads various message boards and such on the internet, are surely aware of the grammatical errors and misspellings, which reach far and wide. How many of us recognize that many people just plain do not know they are making an error?
Also, one would almost have to be a professional linguist to catch all of these errors.
I, for one, know that I would be lost without my word processor. (A smiley could go here.)
