How to help your child with science

The best way to help your child with science is to have an interest in science yourself. Learn and utilize the scientific method when dealing with problems in everyday life. Help your child find books and movies dealing with scientific things. Try to get your child interested in the natural world. The study of nature is how science evolved to the state it is in today. Show your child some of the stars in the night sky. Learn how to find the planets. Read books to your child about different branches of science. There is a lot of material available.

If your child is studying science in school, take the time to read the textbook. This can be a refresher course for you as well. If you know what your child is supposed to be learning you can take part in their education and teach them a few things yourself. Try not to have a negative opinion of things in general. Negative opinions are contagious. Display an interest in different scientific topics and your child will develop similar interests.

Take trips to the park to study botany. Visit a creek and try to catch and identify water creatures. Look at birds out of your window and try to identify them. The scientific outlook on life is a learned outlook. You must have some knowledge yourself to share this knowledge with your children.

Helping your child with science does not mean building science fair projects for them. It means taking the time to learn a few things yourself and passing these things on. Read all the material you can on the scientific method. Learn some of the history of science. You cannot help a person to understand something you do not understand yourself. Have patience and a sense of wonder at the natural world. Buy a few fun science kits or things like binoculars, telescope, or microscope. Do experiments in your kitchen with baking soda and vinegar. Talk about science in the news. There is no end to the ways available to you to help your child learn about science and the world.
