Employment: Fun jobs

Writing is a fun job....

Why write? What do you get out of writing? What if no one ever published your writing? Do you feel so deeply about writing that you would go on writing whether anyone ever published your works or not? If you intend to be a resolute writer, these questions must be answered.

Regardless of how ingeniously written or well documented your work is, an editor will not publish the work until the writer's qualifications are evaluated. If you submitted a great magazine article about the cost of medical malpractice insurance, for example, the editor wants to know that you are credible, experienced or educated to write about the subject before it is published. In other words, professional credentials are usually necessary to open the doors of the editors and publishers before they will even consider publishing writing from unknown authors on such technical subjects.

Successful writers must first define what they visualize as success. Is your vision publishing an article in a magazine? Or is it writing and having published a novel of epic scope? Perhaps you expect nothing less than fame and fortune! Either way, you must have a guide to help you along the way. There are different paths to follow to reach your goals, no matter what they are.

You must evaluate and exploit the advantage of your unique talents, background, education, cultural heritage, family history and experience. Writers who have achieved publication also found the way that was best for them to get where they wanted to go. This is what you must do.

Finding Your Niche!

Identify your subject(s) of expertise or define your areas of interest. It is difficult to succeed as a "generalist" as a freelance writer. Writers, by definition, are thought of as authorities or even experts on the subjects they write. Think about it. When you read an article in a magazine about a specific subject, let's say you have an interest in movie making, you expect the person authoring the article to be extremely well informed. More than likely, you want to know what the author's qualifications are before you weigh the opinions expressed in the article.

As your career as a freelance writer blossoms, opportunities to expand your interest shall arise. When they do, you can determine whether to change roads or stay on the one you had already chosen. The advantage you have as a freelancer is that the choice is always yours. In the end, however, success still depends upon how good you are at what you do. Those who succeed are usually the ones who prepare the best and work the hardest.
