Another Johnny Depp fan here to swoon and pine over his marvelous acting abilities and genius. It is important to note that Johnny is known more for his characters rather than his movies. Unlike Vin Diesel who is only known for his action flicks or Keanu Reeves who unmistakably plays the same unemotional characters over and over Johnny Depp is a genius of diversity. That his characters are more loved than the movies themselves, in my opinion, is his appeal. He chooses characters that challenge him, characters that he can grow with and transform. Screw the obvious commercial characters like the "tough" cop or the "faithless" scientist. He takes the dark characters, the characters that we don't really think about, but know are there. That's part of his genius, as well. He takes these characters that on a normal basis we would think of as horribly creepy or misunderstood and makes us care for and understand them.

Everyone here has done a top ten, so to shorten your reading, I will do a top five, which is tremendously difficult since all of Depp's characters are well-crafted and ingenious.

1. Don Juan DeMarco is my favorite Depp character. As a young man who believes he is the greatest lover in the world, his turmoil is brought to life. Slowly, along with the psychiatrist (Marlon Brando) we learn his story of love and heartbreak, family tension, and need for an identity. He is a character that brings into question the meaning of life and love, even of reality. He believes so wholeheartedly that he is this person that we as an audience feel pained as well that no one believes him, a situation that often happens to many of us. And all the while he is charismatic and humorous, which makes his character even more appealing. If you're a man and want to learn how to treat women (aside from DeMarco's polygamous aspect), watch this movie.

2. Captain Jack Sparrow is one of Depp's more commercially successful characters. It's impossible to go into any store without seeing Sparrow's face. I don't think any other actor could have done this character justice. He is weird and has a dark side, but all the while has an undeniable charisma and humor. He always has a plan, even though we never quite know what it is. And even though we can never quite follow what he is saying or how he thinks there is an undeniable attraction. Everybody loves him. How could you not? He's Captain Jack Sparrow.

3. Edward Scissorhands was my first J Depp experience as a kid and I fell in love with the movie.
