To create a united Iraq, just another western dream, or an absolute necessity?
As outsiders to this country I think we need to take a much broader and less knee jerk response to the present destruction and Human loss being suffered there now.
The present country known as Iraq is a historical legacy of the Great War. A country drawn up by the conquering British and French Governments with no consideration of the make up of its indigenous people. How that has come back to haunt us all.
But when we look at a Global view of how these disputes do or do not resolve that gives some clue as to the possible future of the area.
It is simply a matter of time until we abandon the people of Iraq to their fate. It is an unpopular and damning involvement that political leaders both sides of the Atlantic will have to separate from to survive.
After this, and if the West actually learns some lessons from decades of disastrous foreign policy, and leaves the area to a more local solution then the practicalities of living as a functioning country will be given a chance.
Right now the extremists are flourishing because they have a wonderful common enemy. This is the same scenario that kept any sort of peace from Northern Ireland for an entire Generation.
We must always remember that the people and culture we are talking about are amongst the oldest civilizations in the known world , they enjoyed hundreds of years of beneficent and peaceful rule under an Ottoman Empire. Peace is something that must come from within, not something we can foist an a people because it suits our own immediate aims and needs. We need to give them the environment and space to forge a lasting and real peace from an Independent Nation that will find its own place in the world in time.
