If you are very rich then try Japan.

The rest of us should try China. Right now China is as cheap as it will ever be. The currency has been deliberately undervalued in order to aid exports but this cannot continue for ever. Get China while it is still cheap and get it while it is still there.

China is quite naturally more interested in development than heritage. In a generation they will see the value of the old buildings but right now they seem nothing more than reminders of poverty. If you want to see the old and the new together you should do so now as the nation is developing at an astonishing rate- in fifty years time there may be theme parks on the old China but the original will have been cleared away.

Never worry about politics. All nations have their problems, including the United States- but life continues regardless. If I were to watch the news I would visit the USA expecting to be shot or locked up in Guantanamo Bay- but fortunately I ignore the news entirely.
