Do-it-yourself car repair: Fixing a dent on your car's body

by Tn Fr0g

Being a professional auto body technician ..I can say that fixing dents is an "ART" not a JOB that anyone can do . However anyone willing to , can do it to an extent. Just remember. " Fixed " to one person . may mean " improved " to another . It all depends on your overall, expected outcome. Now to the " dent" . If the damaged area is in a body line or around a corner or at the edge of a panel ? then chances are you will not be able to remove it without doing body work . such as grinding, filler.sanding, priming, painting, and clear coating. Some dents are too small to pop out while others are to big. Either way it may be worth a try if you are wanting to save money. First inspect the damage and try to determine how it happened . the ART is to recreat that damage in reverse. If you are able to get to the inside " or backside" of the dent then you are in better shape . Metal stretches with each impact , so try to pop it as lightly as the metal will allow . start with soft blows increasing as needed . It is always a good idea to have something solid and kinda heavy on the outerside of the damage as you tap the inside.this is called a dolly . it supports the metal and stops it from being pushed too far out of place. This process can be a real chore. For a real quick "FREE" attempt to pop a dent is to get it very hot with a hair-dryer or heat gun then apply ice to the center of the dent.Remember not to melt the paint , It will withstand some extreme temps but will also melt if too hot. This process works but not everytime. Each dent is unique.
