The Lies of Dick Cheney Must be Stopped with Impeachment
In a move backed by a majority of the U.S. public, Democrats and Republicans are working together toward the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney.
Twenty-one members of the U.S. House of Representatives have united around the impeachment of Dick Cheney by signing on as co-sponsors of Rep. Dennis Kucinich's House Resolution 333. Kucinich introduced articles of impeachment against the vice president on April 24, 2007.
"The vice president actively and systematically sought to deceive the citizens and Congress about an alleged threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. He has purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive us about the relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda," Kucinich said.
The U.S. constitution states that impeachment is warranted due to the "high crimes and misdemeanors" of Dick Cheney and possibly of the resigning Deputy Chief of Staff Carl Rove. Dick Cheney lied publicly in the lead up to the invasion of Iraq about the Iraqi government possessing Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD). He continues to lie and contradict his previous public statements about ties between al Qaeda and Iraq, as well as about his statements that there was no doubt Saddam Hussein possessed nuclear weapons.
President George W. Bush has also admitted to the illegal wiretapping of over 150,000 U.S. citizens, in violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). This act requires a court order to be issued by the FISA court before wiretapping can be done. FISA allows for a certain period of time in which the government can conduct wiretaps before receiving the court order. But the Bush administration, including Dick Cheney, decided to flout this law by conducting taps between 2001 and 2005 without using the court.
These and other brazenly unethical and illegal misdeeds are being used as the basis for impeachment proceedings to come within the year by the U.S. House of Representatives. Following the outcome of investigation and a subsequent vote for impeachment in the House, the Senate would then move forward with a trail, and possibly the removal of Vice President Dick Cheney.
