Reflections: Going back home

with my relatives, a man approached us, believing that I was his American cousin, only to discover that I am his cousin's daughter, just a few years older than his cousin was when he last saw her. This must be the feeling people get when they say they live in Douglas, Alaska, are proud to say so, and one better not make the mistake of saying they live in Juneau, even if it is just across a very short bridge. They are exceptional people, in my eyes, to be satisfied with a few summer days of 70-degree weather and a dry, or even partially dry, day here and there at Sandy Beach, which is actually composed of gritty mine tailings, not soft sand. I do like Alaska, and I miss certain things about it, primarily my friends, but home it is not.

What about the adult Americans living in cities of over 60,000 people who have likely moved numerous times in their lives? Do any of them experience the feeling of home? Have you felt that feeling? If not, I sincerely hope that, one day, you have the opportunity to feel it. I hope that feeling never disappears, because if it does, you will long for it; I'm certain. I do. Until I can return to my paese, my famiglia, my casa, I will try to create my casa, my home, where I am, which is all anyone can do, in the meantime.
