The Bible makes it clear. There is no one good enough to go to Heaven. Paul reminds his readers in Romans 3 that "there is none righteous, no not one," and that "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God."
Every person's history contains "bad" things, however innocent we might view them in retrospect. God's law says not to have other gods before Him. Who has not elevated something in his or her life to the status of a god, even if for just a short time? Jesus said not to look at a woman with lust in our heart. Even Jimmy Carter had to admit he was guilty of that one! And who has never, not even once, told a lie?
God is perfect, and His law is perfect. Only perfect people can go to join Him in Heaven. So how does an imperfect person like me become a perfect person who can spend eternity in Heaven with a perfect God?
By faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus is God's perfect Son. He did not sin. Ever. Not once in the thirty-three years He was on this earth did He sin. And yet He went to the cross to suffer and die a sinner's death. He did not do that for Himself. He did it for me. And for you. When I put my faith in Him at the age of 17 nearly fifty years ago, He covered my sins with His blood. In Him I stand perfect before God, though I still struggle with sin on this earth. But it is because Christ is good enough to enter Heaven that I can enter with Him, standing forever in His perfection though I have none of my own.
