Talking dogs: How dogs communicate in human-like ways

I have a pure-bred Maltese named Taya. She behaves like a spoilt child and is able to communicate this through her human-like behaviour. If Taya is angry with me or is feeling ignored she will snort out through her nose. Then she may grab one of my shoes and began thrashing it against the floor.

If this doesn't get my attention she will start growling or charging at me until I chase her. Once I start chasing her she will run around and around the house like she has taken some amphetamines.

If she is in a sulking or anxious mood she will sit by the lounge and whine. That is because she wants to sit on my lap and be pampered. I will give her a massage and she sticks her tongue out and head back to show her appreciation. Sometimes she will make me hold her pigs ear so she can chew it. When she is really anxious she will suck on my wife's thumb.

Taya sleeps on our bed and this is one of the main reasons she thinks she is a human. She will lie on her back with her head on the pillow. She will lie across the bed so there is no room for me to sleep. About 6:30am in the morning she knows it is time for her walk so she stands over my head and growls until I wake up. If I don't wake up she starts to bark.

When we get dressed she knows we are leaving her at home. She will stare at me with a worried look and begin to shake. Her tail will gradually drop below her back and she will lie on the ground with her head resting on her paws. We normally put her in the lounge room and close the door so there is no carpet to wee/poo on. Now when we are leaving and I go to pick her up she immediately runs under the bed. It can take several minutes to catch her otherwise I will leave her to roam the house. She won't do much damage apart from wee and poo everywhere.

If we go out at night she always does a revenge poo for when we get back. Once we have seen the poo she will run up behind us and snort knowing we are angry. If we run at her she will immediately begin charging around the house at full speed. She knows she has done something wrong and finds it to be quite amusing.

If there is ever another dog visiting our house Taya will become quite jealous and attention seeking. She may even wee on her toys and wee around the house to mark her territory. Taya has about 100 toys and I sometimes trip or roll my ankle on her toys as I walk around the house. Sometimes after she wees she will scratch the ground and snort with her head held high.

Taya is a very spoilt, mischievious and disobedient Maltese. It is lucky she is so small and her teeth aren't sharp enough to do any damage to us. Despite this we love her because she is so affectionate and a loyal companion. She is so happy to see us when we get home from work and loves to be massaged and cuddled.
