Defending the 'Gothic Movement'

from the common social perception surrounding them, those individuals often involved in such sub-cultures often confide within others who are also a part of the same group and thus hold similar experiences. This is also another factor often met with hostility and misunderstanding as individuals and parents may often perceive such groups as a cult through which re-enforcement of deviant ideology, behavior and actives are derived. Largely, such groups are often no more sinister than a gathering of friends who choose to socialize with one another due to shared interests and life styles. In this way, the so-called gathering of such individuals is no different to how any other group of individuals will congregate at a central location.

Although often themed around macabre subjects such as death, love, obsession, loss, murder, retribution and tragedy, the gothic sub-culture, in this way can be seen as a contemporary representation of romanticism. However, taking this into consideration, it is important not to generalize individuals through their affiliation with such under ground cultures as the cognitive capacity of each individual is directly attributed to their own unique identity and in this way, cannot be interlinked with how they choose to express themselves. Furthermore, it is also important to remember that the very conceptualization of Goth is far more than a contemporary sub-culture and is rich in historical, cultural and symbolic meaning. The modern representation of Goth, however, is simply a new wave of expressionism resulting from historical, artistic, philosophical and dynamic cultural ideologies.
