It was well past two in the morning when they headed home. "Let's drop off Lupe first. She needs her rest. She's not been feeling well lately," Billy said with obvious concern in his voice.
"I'm not dying, Billy," she retorted irritably. "Besides, I'm staying at Rachel's tonight. You actually think my parents know we went out?"
"You didn't tell me you were sick, Lupe. What's wrong?" Rachel asked.
"It's nothing. Just a little bug that won't go away." Lupe answered evasively, giving Billy a see- what-you-did sort of look.
"A cute little bug, too, I'll bet," John countered smirking. Lupe reached over the back seat and hit him on the top of his head making him laugh.
"Am I missing something?" Rachel said watching them curiously.
"We're here," Lupe said, ignoring her friend.
John pulled into Rachel's driveway and jumped out to open the door for her. "Quite the gentleman, John. Impressive," Rachel said smiling up at him.
"Yes, very impressive," Lupe agreed. "Billy, take notes. Your big brother can teach you a thing or two." She then kissed Billy long and well before hopping out of the car and following the other two up to the door. She slipped between them and kissed John on the cheek. "Nighty-night, Johnny. Thanks for the dancing." She waved and went into the house.
John's heart gave a grand leap. It took all his strength not to follow in after her and give her a real kiss. But as Rachel was watching him closely he cleared his throat and pretended indifference. "She's a funny girl," John said still staring at the closed door.
"She is," Rachel said also giving him a little kiss on the cheek. "Thanks for a great time, John. Hope to see you again soon." He held onto her arm preventing her from going. They stared at each other a second then he bent down and really kissed her, soft and slow. She smiled and breathlessly repeated, "Real soon." then slipped into the house with a little wave.
It was a nice little kiss, he thought as he went back to the car. But it didn't change how he felt. Lupe was all he could think of. Billy had jumped into the front seat giving John the unreasonable urge to make him move to the back seat again. John got into the driver's seat suppressing his envy for his little brother and buckled up. "Put on the belt, Billy."
"You sound like Mom," he grumbled.
"I'm not kidding. Get it on or I'll make you walk home," John retorted, his hands on the steering wheel.
"You serious? It's ten miles. It'll take ten minutes. We won't crash in ten miles," Billy
