What it takes to acquire advanced driving skills

Created on: September 04, 2007

Driving is all ways changing. Laws change and driving conditions change. What was acceptable on the highway before may no longer be acceptable today. Once it was common to use hand-signals, today it is obsolete. There are new laws regarding the use of cell phones and child safety regulations.

For one to become and advanced driver is to not only develop advanced driving skills but to be aware of the changing driving environment. Very often, advanced driving schools will teach a method of driving for a particular type and weight of vehicle and exceptional driving conditions. These may not apply to routine driving. A stunt driver would be foolish to park his car going forty miles per hour, and it is rare that we are going to be involved in a police chase.

In order to excel in a skill such as driving, One must know good-sound time-tested,driving theory. This means seeking out the information that you need from reliable sources and applying that theory to what you do repeatedly until it becomes natural for you.

No matter how much driving experience you have, you can still be poorly trained, and have bad driving habits. I wasn't aware of my bad driving habits until I took some formal training and began to teach and drive for a living. I had to learn from other knowledge-able veteran" road-warriors". I still refer to the text book when-ever I am uncertain about advice given to me.

"AAA" Motor Club is a wonderful reference source for books, tapes, and driving courses, many of which are free or included with your membership; which will pay for itself with one roadside service.

Understanding that you may (not be a fault) if an accident occurs, still gets you the trauma and expense of that accident. It is better to avoid the accident in the first place. By applying safe-driving practices and defensive driving techniques, You can be assured ,that in time you will become an advanced and proficient driver.
