Dog breed: Flat-coated Retriever

research is progressing to better understand the risks.

The incidence of these hereditary diseases is low in comparison to other breeds, however it is recommended you ensure that the parents have been checked and cleared before buying one of their progeny.

Flat coated retrievers thrive on human companionship. The ideal owner is an active person who likes to have their dog with them. They are intelligent and highly trainable and have a perennially happy disposition. Constant tail wagging is a hall mark of the breed. They are always ready for fun and are boisterous even into old age. For this reason care should be taken with small children as they will be easily knocked over by the exuberant Flatcoat. Obedience training is also highly recommended.

Although they are a large dog the Flatcoat will not make even a mediocre guard dog as they love everyone without exception. This is a dog that will expect your constant attention and will feel mortally wounded at any harsh word. They are outgoing and sociable with other dogs and animals and need lots of exercise. They love the water, will retrieve anything and everything and expect to be admired for doing so. If you truly believe your dog is your best friend, the Flatcoat will be your ideal companion.
