When it's time to put an outfit together, I often ignore my purse. I know this is a good thing, especially when later in the day I notice I am wearing a pink dress ... and a red purse. Not good. We may not think the handbag is as important, but what I did was a definite fashion faux pas. Every element of an outfit, including the purse, needs to be well thought out in order to pull a look together.

So what is the art of the handbag? When done properly, the handbag is a way to pull your whole look together. There are so many different purses, there really is something for every mood. Some are simple and classic. Others are trendy. And others are works of art. The right purse will not only compliment your mood, but also your personality.

Here are some tips that will help you when it comes to choosing a purse:

1. Purchase a variety of different purses so you can accomplish a variety of looks. You'll need a purse for work, for the evening, and a variety of fun purses that compliment your favorite outfits.

2. Don't limit yourself to one color or one type of fabric. Have fun with your purses. A purse in a simple color is a good wardrobe staple, but shake things up a little bit by playing with fabric types.

3. Treat your purse like a work of art. Wear a simple outfit and a standout purse. It's a great way to get noticed!

4. Who says that your purse needs to match your shoes? That rule is outdated. If you want to do it, fine. It's just not necessary. Instead, think about how the purse works with the rest of your outfit.

5. You can also make your own purse. This is the ultimate in using your purse as a means for self expression. Just remember - when you go to wear it, you need to make sure it compliments your outfit.

A handbag is truly something that can make a statement. It tells people who you are because you can express yourself by choosing one that matches your outfit and your personality. They are definitely more than just something to hold your things. So when it is time to purchase a purse, if you keep these things in mind you'll end up putting together a stunning outfit.
