Reflections on the best and worst of karaoke

Karaoke is a very unusual pastime. Ever since I can remember, my parents have been singing karaoke at their 'Local', the pub down the road, every Saturday. Although it is something they enjoy, I myself find it confusing. Who likes to get up in front of a group of primarily drunk people to sing badly out of tune with a really distasteful song just for a few laughs? The concept is unfortunately lost on me. Many a time have I watched my parents and my friends take to the stage to perform rather unusual renditions of their favorite songs, and although it can be funny, it can be highly embarrassing for them and for yourself too. Especially if they are really drunk and fall dramatically off the stage flashing their polka-dot panties to the baying crowd...

However there are decent karaoke gigs where wannabe stars perform with such passion, this I cant object to as it may be their one way of finding stardom, or relieving the pressures of life. Their 'outlet' in a way. I don't mind private karaoke parties, where a close group of family and friends meet to have a nice barbecue on a sunny Saturday afternoon, then they join together afterward for a little sing-a-long. These karaoke nights are very fun and enjoyable with an added upside: no polka-dot panties.

Basically good karaoke depends on the place and the people. A pub full of drunks and an old karaoke machine that cant make the words go with the song is just not that fun, although it can lead to some amusing reminiscing. Whereas a clean, trendy environment can lead to a very enjoyable night. And who knows? Maybe even stardom.
