Letter to African American educators

by SunNita

Dear Educator,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share the knowledge you possess with the rest of the world. It is so important to have a good understanding of who one is and where one comes from. It is equally important to know the beneficial role African Americans have played in American society. It is my belief that "ignorance" is the driving force behind prejudices, not just outward but even within. African Americans need to have an understanding of who they are passed slavery,I know this will improve personal identity issues which inevitably will improve the community as a whole; But it all starts with EDUCATION. Due to the slave trade the African people lost their identity,it was a loss of language, tribal connection, loss of self; this spirit lives on in our community but manifests in different ways;negative ways. There is a DNA test that now provides us with our ancestry, wouldn't it be beneficial to offer classes on identity before slavery, then DNA and trips to different countries in Africa.(or visit African families here in the U.S. that would be willing to participate) This obviously would call for funds, perhaps we could get grants.I'll shy away from the business aspect for now, I just wanted to propose an idea for the furthering of African American education.

Thankyou,
SunNita
