During the DWI check the police are checking the driver for their seat belts, looking into the car for any signs of alcohol or drug paraphernalia. Police also check the driver's breath for any smell of alcohol.
Another sting method used is having parties busted that have teens in attendance with alcohol being served. Parents or concerned citizens call in a party to police, the police respond with several officers ready to arrest people for serving minors, and underage drinking (Prevention: Teens and Alcohol).
Parents and guardians need to communicate to their children and teens. There needs to be discussion about drinking alcohol. Discussions should surround health effects, problems associated with drinking alcohol, and how to say NO to their friends about drinking. Parents and guardians need to ask WHO their child is going with, WHAT they are doing, WHEN they will be home, WHERE they are going, and HOW they are getting there and back home again. The more parents know, the better the chance their child will be respectful of their parents' rules. It is important to remember that adolescents respond well to parents that are supportive and include their teens in the family decision-making process.
Prevention of alcohol usage has not always been an effective tool in the school systems. Schools have implemented different programs to teach students about alcohol and drugs. It isn't helpful to students that have parents that abuse alcohol and drugs, or parents that do not communicate with them. School is a good place for students to learn the harmful effects of alcohol on their bodies, but students may not be listening or participating in the program to their potential. The students may have friends that use drugs and alcohol, and may not feel comfortable talking openly about drugs and alcohol in a classroom setting (Prevention: Teens and Alcohol).
Students Against Drunk Driving has become more and more influential with more than sixteen thousand chapters in the United States. SADD helps students realize the ill effects of alcohol and driving. This helps teens realize the importance of not driving while drinking, or getting into a vehicle with someone that has been drinking.
