The immediate and intuitive reply to this question is often "Yes, of course, Why shouldn't everyone be entitled to attend the college of their choice". The Reality, however, is naturally ever more complicated.
First and foremost we should evaluated the following basic arguments:
1. A society must nurture and advance its most gifted members thus enabling itself to evolve.
2. There is a need for a tool to discern these individuals.
If we can agree on the aforementioned arguments as a basis for this debate I think the conclusions are quite inevitable.
There is a vast number of variables to be considered in college applicants' achievements, background and future academic potential. In order to select those individuals with the best chances of success a standardized tool must be used.
Yes, The S.A.T's may not be an ideal tool for those purposes. It might be influenced by external circumstances such as social background but with the absence of a better tool it is the only way to insure the best possible candidates are accepted.
We may claim other applicants to be just a worthy of acceptance but that does not effect the desirable outcome aforementioned in argument 2.
