It would be a crime to abolish the SAT's. While college admissions boards look broadly at each individual applicant, the SAT scores remain a standard of academic ability. Granted, over the past few decades average scores have dropped (though I have heard it said that the preparers made the tests easier and it still didn't help!) Still, a standard against which a student's academic ability and success can be measured and compared to his peers is an invaluable piece of information.

College education should not be a right. It should not be and cannot be for everybody. If one lessens the standards so that anyone can get in, then a college education means nothing. Colleges have a right and responsibility to maintain high standards of academic rigor in both admissions and in their courses of study.

Like it or not, job competition is now an international affair. Graduates from American colleges must be prepared to compete with graduates from Europe, Japan, China and Turkey. Keep the SATs. Improve primary and secondary school education to the point that at least students can write a sentence and spell most words and read the application form . It would be nice if they could also learn how to balance a checkbook.
