Crabs is the slang name for pubic lice (Pediculosis pubis). They are a form of lice that live in hairy areas all over the body, but prefer to live in the pubic area.
You generally get crabs through intimate (touching) contact with an infected person. You can get them up if you share clothing, hairbrushes or combs with an infected person.
The lice are very small and difficult to see- they cannot jump, but can move rapidly through hair. The nits are egg sacs which are attached to the hairs.
Most people seek medical treatment because they (or their partner) sees lice or nits; or because of the itching caused by the lice.
Patients will generally be treated with prescription shampoo. Bedding, and clothing should be washed in HOT water (135 degrees), and vacuuming may help remove nits or loose lice. Close contacts should undergo treatment at the same time to prevent re-infection.
