Yes, the S.A.T. should be abolished altogether or at least given less consideration than other more telling numbers, such as the GPA. It is my belief that a one time biased test is in no way determinant of how a student will perform in the college atmosphere. How so much weight can be given to a standardized test is baffling. Why is it that the S.A.T score receives just as much consideration as the students GPA? A GPA is the sum total of the students entire high school career and an S.A.T score can be lowered drastically if for some reason the student didn't have the right type of calculator or were too nervous to concentrate properly etc.

Not only does the S.A.T score determine which college will accept a student, but it also determines whether or not that student receives any scholarships. This to me is especially unfair, scholarships should be based on performance not on how good someone is at taking a test. As a high school senior I was in the top 10 of my graduating class. I graduated "with honors," and a nearly perfect GPA. I applied to a certain school for their journalism program but because I had a very average score on my S.A.T I was not accepted. The school I applied to was very competitive and only accepted the brightest students, which is fine. I had the required GPA but my S.A.T wasn't up to speed. Because of this my entire future was then altered.

I applied to a less prestigious school and was accepted. However, the only student aid I was able to receive were loans that were a financial burden to my parents and after graduating in 2003, they are now crippling me financially. I can't help but think that my college experience would have been better if I'd been accepted to the first school of my choosing. Perhaps I would have been able to obtain a better job as well if my degree had come from the better school.
