I don't think the average American is lazy; it just doesn't take very much effort to obtain a comfortable lifestyle. There are not many Americans that are unwilling to put in the effort to support themselves, but since this has become so easy, it gives the appearance of laziness.

Laziness means having a disinclination to work. Almost all Americans realize they are expected to work. They may grumble about their job, but they punch in every day and complete their tasks. Several studies show that Americans work longer hours with less vacation days per year than other industrialized nations.

The apparent laziness of Americans isn't the result of a poor work ethic, but from how Americans make use of their leisure hours. I have to admit, we aren't very constructive with our free time. The most popular leisure pursuits (watching T.V., playing video games, spending time on-line, etc) are sedentary. These activities require little physical effort, however, they are done not out of laziness, but because they are sincerely enjoyed by the majority of Americans.

Sure, more Americans would benefit from a bit more exercise, but don't blame them for reaping the rewards of living in a prosperous country.
