Genesis 2:9 Out of the ground the LORD God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Genesis 2:16-17 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die."
There they stood two healthy trees bearing delicious food. Then God commands all humanity not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. But, he made it good for food. Only Two chapters into the Bible and we are faced with ambiguity and tension. So, are these trees real or not? That depends on your point of view.
When we learn something new our eyes are opened and we see everything in a new way. We are not the same at all, in fact, you can say that our old selves are dead to the new knowledge we have obtained. In this way the fruit tree of knowledge of good and evil is real because knowledge is real. The better question is: "is knowledge tangible?" Well, you can't kick it, taste it, or see it; you can feel it and it does change you.
I do not believe that it was an actual tree, however, it is a beautiful image nonetheless.
