Essays: Why we write

Why I Write

Writing is the intellectual channel through which our innermost thoughts are allowed to flow. It gets the creative juices flowing and generates its own momentum. When we sit down to write, the ideas start to cascade and sometimes the final result startles even its author. It may be an essay, a poem or perhaps a memoir. A literary journey can be like a magical mystery tour or a carnival ride. How long it lasts depends entirely on our imagination.

Drawing on life experiences and a mental dictionary, the word processor often becomes the canvas for a potential masterpiece. More importantly, it encourages us to expand our vocabulary and comprehension while enticing the use of a thesaurus. Let's face it , The day we stop learning, is the day we stop living.

If you've ever watched a movie based on a previously read book , you may have noticed that almost invariably, the storyline was slightly different, as was the impact. Words cannot be replicated in visual effects. Even the narration and dialogue will leave you with a different impression to your reading experience. Why? because stories written well come from the heart. The brain merely arranges the logic. .

Writitng is one form of free expression. As explained by Julie Cameron in her book "The Artist's Way (A Course in Discovering and Recovering Your Creative Self) "putting pen to paper is a way of rediscovering one's creativty ". The life force within us cannot be ignited through watching television. The electronic media may provoke thought, it may even inspire us to create, but is nevertheless a transference of the thoughts of others. Just like the antenna, we become a motionless receiver of signals.

Conversely, every waking day of our lives delivers a notable subject for a story or an article. From totally unrelated incidents, characters can be created or adapted, plots and sub plots can be devised. As we progress on an exciting journey, the mind is driven by its own ability. Ideas are elaborated or replaced by new ones and we find ourselves living in a new world of mystery and intrigue. Intertwined with the product of a vivid imagination is an intangible element that is our personal footprint.
The story can be a romantic comedy or a tale of terror. The footprint remains the same. It defines who we are as individuals and it is the reason why I write.
