When my ex-wife (we'll call her "Jane") and I got married, we already had a house picked out. It was the model home in a new housing development; it was a Cape Cod with a two stall garage and freshly painted walls. The house was used as an office, and at the time we bought it, nobody had EVER lived there. In other words, it was the last place on earth you would ever expect to find a ghost.
My wife had a teenage daughter ("Jill"), so there were three of us in the house, and whatever this "thing" was, it seemed to single me out from the beginning. Looking back, I would say that the first sign was something tugging at the covers on my side of the bed. I wasn't a believer, so I assumed it was a result of my wife rolling around and disturbing the bed clothes in her sleep. She was a restless sleeper, and it was pretty easy to write things off, so I did.
The whole affair was building into a crescendo, so, naturally, the second step was relatively mild. I have rotating days off from work, and a couple times there were rappings on the walls while "Jane" was at work and "Jill" was at school. This was odd, but air gets in water pipes, new houses settle, etc. Once again, I chose to ignore these happenings because, quite frankly, there were just too many explanations. However, after we were there about six months "it" decided to make contact.
The first time, I was in bed waiting for the second ringing of the alarm. Jane had to be up for work at 5am, and I was awoken by a voice that said my name just a few inches from my ear. I rolled over immediately and looked up to see my wife standing at the sink...20 feet away...in the process of putting on her makeup with the bathroom sink running full blast. I asked her what she wanted, and her response was, of course, "What are you talking about?" I wasn't convinced yet, so I didn't tell her anything that had happened until the second auditory contact. I fell asleep on the couch watching TV (naturally while the females in the house were away for the weekend!) and heard it loud and clear...
"Can't you hear me!"
Now, I was 99.44% sure that something was badly wrong with our dream home, and I talked to Jane about it just minutes after she got back home. She gave me a strange look and just laughed. Whatever it was must have heard her and been insulted by her scoffing tone. Within a few days, Jane woke up one morning and tumbled out of bed BECAUSE her pajama bottoms were tied in a knot around her ankles. She blamed me at first, but my look must have given away the fact that I was MORE bothered by it than she was.
I was married to a manager for a large company, and she got a promotion. We had to move about thirty miles down the road so she could be available for emergencies, but before we moved out, there was one last surprise. Our daughter was at a friend's house, and Jane and I were watching television late one night when it happened: the was a loud noise, somewhere between a creak and a shriek, that lasted for thirty-some odd seconds. There was no natural explanation. We slept that night with every light in the house on. Our story ends there.
That was a few years ago, and the house has sold at least three times since. I have always wanted to knock on the door and ask the present owner(s) if anything odd ever happened there. I can't say that I ever saw a ghost, but the auditory and physical evidence were pretty overwhelming. What I'm telling you is what I remember off the top of my head. In all, I would say that I experienced 25-30 odd incidents in that house, and I have been a believer ever since.
