If you're not supposed to drink and drive, then why do bars have parking lots?

As with anything concerning alcohol, it is important to have control. Yes, bars have parking lots. But that doesn't mean that it is therefore okay to drink and drive. If you think about it, the American culture is one where walking and taking transportation isn't necessarily easy, especially in more remote areas. That means that if people want to go out and drink, they will have to drive to the bar they want to drink at.

There are several ways that a person can handle this. They could be irresponsible, drink too much, and then drive home. Sometimes, people make it home safe. But a lot of the time they could get in serious trouble, be seriously injured, or injure or kill someone else in the car or in another car. Drunk driving accidents are often tragic. If you choose to take your car to the bar, be smart about it. If you can't drive home, give the keys to a sober friend. Or just leave the car there and find a taxi.

The ultra responsible thing to do is to have a designated driver. The DD should have 1-2 alcoholic drinks and plenty of water. Or, they shouldn't drink alcohol at all. The idea is that you will have someone in your group who is sober and can not only get you home, but prevent you all from doing anything stupid while drunk. Choose someone who doesn't plan on drink. Or, if you all enjoy drinking equally and you drink a lot together, take turns being the designated driver.

If the option is available to you, you could also take public transportation. And, most areas have taxis. Sometimes it is better to split a taxi ride than worry about having a designated driver.

Often, bartenders will refuse to serve someone who is completely drunk. If you're passing out at the bar, they won't sell you any more alcohol. Some places will even kick you out. If this happens to you, don't argue it. Be happy that someone is watching out for you. At the same time, if you are in a large group you should all watch out for each other. If a friend has had too much to drink, get them to stop and have them drink a lot of water. Even if they get angry that you won't let them drink anymore, they'll think you the next day.

Bars have parking lots out of necessity. People need to have a way to get there. Since most people drive, they are inevitable. But it is important to be smart about how much you're drinking and make sure your or anyone else in your group doesn't take the wheel drunk. This could result in a serious accident or a DUI - both of which can have serious consequences.
