Every week or so, I hear a news story telling us of a new spinach recall. I have taken up the idea that in certain areas like the mid-west United States and in California there does not seem to be much control on the produce that comes out of these areas. Frankly, it scares the life out of me to think that I might be feeding my child an e coli death sentence. So, I decided, several months ago, to buy local. I have even thought of growing my own spinach out on my apartment balcony. Stronger controls over the areas and the grounds of produce growers in the United States should be taken prior to leaving the farm. Also, in a news broadcast I saw on the CBC, I heard that FDA agents cannot determine where an outbreak of e coli contaminated areas of a produce farm are until there is an outbreak because they say they simply do not have the manpower to check all portions of a field. I feel, that by buying local, I have a better chance of not having my lettuce or my spinach contaminated by things like Deer feces and certain pesticides that may not be approved by the government. It's a small decision but it is one I hope will save my child and myself from falling victim to someone else's mistakes.
