I liked the menus, design,
built-in speaker for music, and the slider style of the phone. As most
reviewers noted of the model, the heat sensitive "iPod-like" navigation
buttons were sometimes difficult to use. The layout in general was an
exception to that of other LG phones. Details aside the phone is stylish, high
quality, great fun, and only increased my confidence in LG cell phones and
their popularity.
After test driving the newest generation of the LG Chocolate (VX8550)
offered by Verizon, it's a definite improvement from the original. The design
is smoother with less sharp corners and the navigation buttons are improved
(less heat sensitive areas with more actual buttons) which really contributes
to easier use.
The design of the LG Chocolate phones isn't loved by all, but is adored by
many. Yes, I got terribly sick of the "candy-inspired" marketing but it has no
doubt contributed to wide popularity. Offered by Verizon in a variety of
yummy sounding colors the original VX8500 choices include White Chocolate,
Cherry Chocolate, Mint Chocolate, and Strawberry Chocolate no wonder
these are popular with teenagers and even young adults. I've definitely seen
older individuals with these phones and they seem to love them just as
much. The new VX8550 is offered in darker, more grownup colors including
Blue Mint and Black Cherry. Both models are available in the original solid
black color.
Another more grownup version of the LG Chocolate line comes in the form of
a clamshell, flip-phone model with heat sensitive music controls on the front
cover. This phone originally titled LG Black Sapphire was offered by Verizon
as the LG VX8600. The usability and learning curve of this phone is generally
better than the original Chocolate slider. If the LG Shine hadn't started being
offered by Verizon, this particular flip-phone was my backup plan.
In addition to the LG models above, all sexy in their own right, LG offers
other great looking phones carried in the United States. These include the
VX8300 (dark gray, sturdy flip-phone) and the LG VX9400 (unique
multimedia phone with a screen which turns sideways for "widescreen"
viewing) both offered by Verizon.
AT&T sometimes has an LG model or two, while Sprint offers an LG Muziq
570 which at first glance seems to be a hybrid of the original LG Chocolate
and the clamshell LG Chocolate. The hybrid look comes from the heat
sensitive circular navigation on the front, while the phone flips open to reveal
traditional buttons and keypad. This LG music super phone has
