Tips for setting employee goals

are centered on more meaningful aspects of maintaining and improving the business.

It is also important to set deadlines at specific points in establishing the path towards success. Employees need to understand, through the goal setting process, what is expected of them. In addition, they need clear direction and a chance to provide input, on when specific milestones can be met.

Some tips to help your employee with the goal setting process include putting goals into a formal written document. This confirms commitments made in assigning goals and provides a vehicle for sharing your team's objectives within the organization. Sharing your goals is important in ensuring you will receive the necessary support from other teams and organizations, as well as for communicating your intentions with management. This leads to better alignment between teams.

It is important to schedule progress reports. This will help employees understand what progress has been made in meeting their obligations and provides an opportunity to refine the details of previously established goals. Periodic reviews will keep your staff on track and disciplined with scheduling their time. Together, you can determine if goals are being accomplished in the right manner and timeframe. You can then provide critical feedback which may change ineffective behavior. You can also recognize major achievements at this point and even celebrate project milestones. This will provide additional encouragement and support for your team.

If you can foster decisiveness, keep employees focused and maintain open channels of communication, you will have greater success in helping employees manage their goals. Occasionally, goals will face challenge and obstacles. Sometimes it requires a new direction or defining the goal is a new way. If you can be prepared to anticipate setbacks through regular progress checks, you may be able to easily accommodate opportunities for change.

The more you put into the process, the greater the chance that your employees will be receptive to including the management of goals and objectives into their regular work.
