Rediscovering your creativity

We all begin life being highly creative. The problem is that as we get older we forget how to do it. Toddlers spend 98% of their time being creative and trying things for the first time and only 2% applying what they have already learned.

By the time we are in our thirties, however this has reversed and most of us spend 98% of our time doing what we have already learned and only 2% being creative and imaginative.

So if you want to start being creative, rediscover the child within and teach yourself to play again. Buy some colored pens and a notepad and start blue-sky thinking! What if my life were different? What if we did things differently at work? Dare to imagine changing everything. Think outside the box. Set yourself free to think the unthinkable.

Let your workplace start to become a place of creativity. If your life is black and white, color it in!. Keep notes of all your ideas, even the crazy ones. Use your imagination to imagine how you want your life to be. The more you use your imagination the more creative you will become.

Set aside time everyday to be creative. The best ideas come when our minds are focused elsewhere. Try spending time staring at the ocean or looking at a log fire. Take a long, slow bath, close your eyes and let the ideas come. Go to sleep thinking creative thoughts and in the morning the seeds you planted will have blossomed into new projects and big ideas.

Keep a journal and note down the ideas as they come to you. Another way of kick starting your creativity when you feel 'dry' is to reread your journal and develop the thoughts further that you have already had. Don't limit yourself to words. Capture your ideas as diagrams and sketches too. Always remind yourself that being creative means no longer following the herd.

We were created to creative and innovative. Don't let life take that away from you.
Get in touch with the child within and start unleashing your creativity today. Not only will it make you happier but it may also change your life for the better.
