Sleep hyperhidrosis (night sweats) symptoms

Sleep hyperhidrosis, more commonly known as the night sweats, is the occurrence of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) during sleep.

Sleep hyperhidrosis may occur at any age, but is most commonly seen in early adulthood. Night sweats may occur for genetic reasons and may be relatively harmless. However, they can be distressing and disrupt sleep patterns if severe; the patient may be frequently awakened due to the discomfort of damp sleepwear.

One of the most common causes of night sweats in women over 40 is the hormonal changes related to menopause and perimenopause. This is a normal part of menopause and while annoying, it is not necessarily dangerous or a sign of underlying disease. Some women experience night sweats during pregnancy due to hormonal changes (1).

The sweating can cause an awakening because of discomfort due to wet sleepwear, Polysomnography shows: With quinizarin powder, which turns purple on contact with sweat, can be used to show affected areas to demonstrate excessive sweating during sleep.

Some patients may have a lifelong tendency to sweat excessively during sleep; in other patients. the disorder appears to be self-limited.
There are two types of excessive sweating: In Primary type has no known cause and is so severe and debilitating that it interferes with everyday activities, such as working, going to school, etc. This type of hyperhidrosis is sometimes treated by operating to remove the sweat glands. In secondary type is generally found to be a symptom of an underlying cause.

Sleep Hyperhidrosis can be due to a variety of underlying disorders, such as; febrile illness , diabetes insipidus (the chronic excretion of large amounts of pale urine, accompanied by extreme thirst), hyperthyroidism (A disorder in which the thyroid is over-active), pheochromocytoma (secretion from usually benign cells in the brain that produces excessive sweating as one of its symptoms), hypothalamic lesions, epilepsy, cerebral and brain stem strokes, cerebral palsy, chronic paroxysmal hemi crania (sudden onset migraine),spinal cord infarction (sudden insufficiency in blood supply, head injury, familial dysautomia (a congenital syndrome with specific disturbances of the nervous system, can occur in pregnancy and can be produced by antipyretic medications (anti-nausea), or as sleep disorder, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.
Its severity is from mild form which no bathing or changing clothes required to severe form, which both are required.
