It is interesting to note each opinion about what martial arts form is best for self defense. However, it really does not make one whit of difference if you cannot use what you have spent all your time studying and practicing when push comes to shove. Too many people claim to teach self defense, when in reality, their last fight was in elementary school. Methinks this is akin to blind faith. Another problem is that some instructors confuse martial art with martial sport. Playing a variation of tag is all well and good in a tournament, but how well will it serve you when that day comes and all things hinge on your game? Each person takes up martial arts for a variety of reasons- fitness, discipline, a sense of achievement, self defense, sport, and even just because it looks neat or cool. These reasons may vary in combination and percentage of concentration as well. It matters not which art you partake of for self defense. Until you can make the art your own, by this I mean that the art fits you like your favorite pair of boots, it is very questionable as to whether or not the art will be effective. As noted before, there are no arts that are better than other arts, it is simply a matter of personal preference and suitability. If there were such thing as the "ultimate" martial art, no one would bother studying anything else for this would be a waste of time. If the art does not work for you in a self defense scenario, perhaps you need to rethink your approach and most importantly, WHY did you let things progress to the point of needing to get physical someone? Contrary to popular belief, violence does not just happen. Violence happens when all other warning signs are ignored. For a much better explanation of this concept, please see www.nononsenseselfdefense.com. Mr. MacYoung and Mrs. Gordon explain this far better than I. Think of violence as a job. Before each person gets a job, there is an application and interviewing process. The same thing happens with violence.
