Short stories: The unknown

My shadow was in my way

The wind blew strong that night, as Tony made his way across the slick, mirrored blacktop. He was on his way home now, and it was almost daylight. He could see that the cloudless sky was just starting to lighten just over the horizon. He had left the crowd about an hour ago, not really heading straight home, but needing to clear his head. Needing so bad to clear his head of all the screaming and pain that was shooting through it relentlessly.

Tony had not always hung with this crowd. He sort of got mixed up with them by mistake. He was a quiet kid, with problems of his own. He was minding his own business when they approached him, he had started hanging out and it just got complicated from there. But he did have the black boots, he had always worn the heavy black boots, he felt powerful and proud in them. He had shaved his head and had different piercings, but nothing that he would consider to be over the edge. Besides, he had never been in trouble with the law, and now all that was about to change. Tony knew that his life was about to change in a big way.
They had been gathered down by the bus depot, were they hung out now and then. Around the back, there was a table and it was a fairly busy corner so they could catch all the action. It was late and they were just breaking up, when someone walked by on the other side of the street. His crowd noticed and started calling out to this person. The person kept walking, a little faster now. They all took off to the other side of the street. Tony followed, staying back. He was
