What are the benefits of babywearing

The practice of baby wearing is something that parents have done for thousands of years. From slings to carriers mothers all around the world have carried their babies close to them. In modern society we tend to push our babies far away from us, pushing them in strollers out in front of us with little to no physical contact. For those who were raised with this being the norm baby wearing can seem strange and unusual. Are there benefits to wearing your baby close to you? The experts feel so.

Many agree that keeping your baby close to you is beneficial to your baby's physical development. Young babies are not able to control their bodily functions, such as breathing and heart rate, in the same way that an adult can. Keeping your baby close to you allows his body to become in tune with your's. This can create a sort of womb-like experience where in your child feels your breathing and heartbeat, sways with your movements, and can develop in tune with you.

There are several studies that have shown that babies who are worn or carried more are also happier in general. No one wants to hear their baby cry, it is exhausting for both the child and the parents. and studies have shown that excessive crying can cause permanent damage to a young baby's brain. A happier baby will cry less, which is less stressful for both child and parent.

Baby wearing can also be beneficial to the parents. Slings are cheaper and more portable than strollers and travel equipment. Using a sling can make breastfeeding an easier task as the sling will support and cover your baby while he nurses. Father, grandparents, and other family members can also wear your baby in a sling easily and have a chance to bond more with the content baby.

My personal favorite reason to choose baby wearing is that it makes working easier. No longer do I have to choose between sitting and comforting my crying baby or cleaning while the baby cries. I can carry my baby on my back and continue to clean, cook, and many other tasks as usual while my baby happily comes along for the ride. Any tool that makes it easier for new mothers to get things done is a huge benefit indeed.
