As a paid up member of myfootballclub.co.uk I feel it my duty to say a few words on our behalf.
The idea is a simple but ingenious one. To give football fans a voice again in a sport that is becoming dominated by big business. Partly as a backlash to foreign owners buying up big clubs to use as their personal playthings, and partly so fans can feel a real connection to the sport again.
This is going to be achieved by persuading thousands of football fans to pay 35 pounds each in order to buy a football club. In return the members will get to vote, via the website, on all major club decisions, including team selection and player transfers.
As soon as more than 50,000 people had registered their interest in the idea, money began to be collected. We have no idea have many of those actually coughed up the money though. We do know that there is already enough money in the club purchase fund to buy a club. This is partly thanks to an unquantified donation from EA Sports. The myfootballclub team is currently in negotiations with 4 un-named clubs.
The 35 is an annual membership to the trust that will own the club. Giving the club an extra annual income to help it succeed.
The myfootballclub concept is basically as experiment in 'the wisdom of crowds'. Many critics have doubted this wisdom after taking a look at the top ten voted for clubs to buy, shown on the homepage. What it doesn't tell you is that 35% of members voted 'don't mind' for their choice of club. Showing that they are realistic about the chances of buying any particular club.
The idea of the fans being responsible for all major club decisions is unprecedented in the world of football and could be considered radical. There will no doubt be many hurdles to overcome. That's why its such an exciting thing to be a part of. No longer will the fans be able to blame the manager or the chairman when things go badly for the club. We will have no-one to blame but ourselves. I can't wait!
