My personal opinion is IF you have never had a person you love struggle with addiction then you will not "get" why this book was so important. I think we must consider the overall message of the book which is courage and the ability to overcome addiction.
I think you also have to keep in mind that when a person tells their story it is THEIR story from their perspective. I don't know because I am not an addict.... but feel I would not be able to recall exactly what happened with total accuracy if I was embattled in the recovery process.
I cannot begin to tell you how this book has helped me understand my younger brothers struggle with alcoholism. I am amazed that James Frey had the strength to get all of the emotions he went through onto the pages of a book. I am so very grateful that he had the tenacity to stay with it.
Also, I am sure that James Frey learned a great lesson through this exposure. He did come clean and I do not know why people continue to disregard the redemptive message of the book!
