I would like to start by quoting a great speech in the movie The American President. "Freedom is defending someone shouting at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours." It isn't easy to put up with but the whole ideal that this country is based on is that a person has the right to say what he or she wants.
However, you don't have to listen and you don't have to be silent. You may have to let him speak, but you can speak out to. The only way to block out hate is to counter with love. You don't have to go silent into the night. You can speak as loudly as the other guy.
The other thing you can do is teach. Teach your children to love. Help them to turn a deaf ear when the hate mongers are shouting their mis-information. Be an example of fairness and honesty. Show them by your example how to show kindness and charity.
Yes the hate mongers have the right to speak. You have the right to oppose them. You have the right to fight back. You have the right to speak louder. You have the right to educate. You are never going to stop them but you can drown them out.
