Understanding the significance of the resurrection of Jesus Christ

by Marcus

The power and strength behind Jesus' resurrection is the fearlessness that Jesus possessed knowingly and willingly going to his death.

The night that he was taken prisoner to stand trial he could have ran down the back side of the Mount of Olives and taken refuge in Bethlehem and would have lived another day. Rather, he walks to the temple guards and allows them to take them away. This is living beyond courage and bravery; this is living a life completely void of fear.

He did not fear the laws of Rome or the Judea. He knew that he was going to die, and he also knew that he was going to live. There are many religions that practice a "death ritual" as part of the initiation. Even in Christianity, baptism can be seen as initiation through spiritual drowning. Jesus' death goes beyond a figurative death, but an actual death through suffocation on a cross. Crucifixion is death by suffocation not by bleeding to death. His resurrection is not figurative in the manner of being lifted from the ground or out the water, but actually being brought back to life again.

To Christians this means that we are free. We can live our lives without the fear of death. We can live our daily lives boldly knowing that this world holds no real power over us.

Without the resurrection, Christianity would not have the unique message of freedom and power that comes from death being conquered.
