Herbal treatment: Tulsi

"The Elixer of Life", better known as tulsi or Holy Basil, has been used in India for over 5000 years. This spicy herb is well known for its use in curry dishes, but it is also famous for its ability to promote long life and reduce stress.

Tulsi essential oil is antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral. It is anti-allergic, making it effective in treating asthma and allergies. Tulsi oil is used as drops for painful earaches.

A paste made from the leaves of the tulsi plant is effective against parasitical skin disorders, such as scabies. Juice from the leaves is used to treat bronchitis in children. Oil from tulsi leaves is also used to repel insects.

In tea form tulsi promotes a feeling of calmness, relieving stress. Tulsi tea is also best to treat coughs, colds, fever, and flu symptoms. It soothes the digestive system, offering relief from diarrhea, constipation, nausea, and vomiting. The tea boosts energy, too.

Tulsi is available as an herbal tea, as a dried powder in capsules, and as a fresh leaf.

For fever, leaf extract in water given every 2-3 hours is effective, especially in children. It also loosens mucus and helps expectoration.

A regular use of tulsi helps maintain a healthy respiratory tract. By taking 1 or 2 capsules of 250 milligrams of tulsi twice a day after meals, you can build up your immune system, breathe easier, and have more energy. Heart disease, diabetes, kidney stones, and a host of other diseases have all shown improvement after a regimen of tulsi use has been established.

Indian scientists are conducting tests on the use of tulsi as an anti-cancer treatment. This herb is certainly becoming an important factor in the field of alternative medicine.
