and
fabulous restaurants andshows. That was my answer!
I jumped on my cell and checked for available seats at Cirque du Soleil, a
personal favorite of mine. There was a show and there were tickets for that
night. After breakfast we rushed to the hotel, gobbled up the tickets and felt
positive for the first time in a whole day. I exhaled. As we drove the Strip I now
had to find a place to stay. Still no rooms at the big hotelsuntil I got to the
last one on my list. The Venetian had a room! Suddenly I felt love for everything
Italian. Immediately I wanted to hug Andrea Bocelli and order a large pepperoni
pizza.
Not only was there a room, we were upgraded to a magnificent suite! With TWO
BEDS! The show that night was delightful, full of spectacle, music, but mostly
diversion. It's not that I didn't love it thoroughly, but it bought me time. And
redemption.
We stayed four nights, ate at posh four-star restaurants, rode the gondola,
visited museums, took happy pictures, and finally were able to relax and enjoy one
another. We drove home with no memories of Martha's Vineyard walks on the
cool sand, no seagulls or brisk dips in the Atlantic, but we managed to find each
other in an unexpected way.
Somehow we turned a bad dream into a living memory and learned some
important lessons about compromise and expectations. Who knows what disaster
awaited us in New England had we chanced to defy the weather? Wasn't our Vegas
lesson more important even if the Vineyard vacation had gone swimmingly? It's been
a year. The marriage has survived. In two weeks we're headed for Martha's
Vineyard where our reservations have been held. Whatever surprises it brings will
be nothing like the first one, but we'll enjoy it like it was the first time.
