At age 13 I was 5'11" and weighed 115 pounds. It took me until the age of 20 before I reached 135 pounds and by then I stood 6'2"". I was thinner than a rail and a slight fall breeze would blow me across town in the blink of an eye.
It would have been great if my middle and high school had a weight lifting class. Sure it would have been awkward and nervewracking but isn't everything at that age? Once the kids get used to the class the benefits would far outway the negatives. Not only would it help shy students come out of their shells but it could also give more mature students practical world lessons.
The class would last all year. The school would hire 1 or 2 full time personal trainers to teach the classes. Then you could also offer teacher assistant positions to junior and senior students who already are in shape ( football players, wrestlers, etc. ). A couple of days during the week are spent in class. The teacher would give lectures on different health issues and how to maintain better health as you grow older. Then on nonclass days the student are in the gym working out. Their programs would be customized by the teacher and then the student would work one on one with the more physically gifted students.
The aides would receive extra credit towards graduation as well as a great transcript addition when they apply to college. The students taking the class would benifit physically and both would profit emotionally. The class could bridge the gap between the jocks and everyone else. Of course I don't expect everyone to be life long friends but you never know. At the very least it might help students coexists and guide them down a path to being better people in general.
