Choosing between contact lenses and glasses

There are pros and cons when choosing either contacts over glasses. Not everyone is suitable for contacts. But in this day in age when everyone is concerned with personal appearance, contact lenses seem to be the good way to go. But before you go ahead with that choice, you may want to ask yourself a few questions before you head into the doctor's office for a fitting.

1. Your age- Are you old enough? Most doctor's will not train anyone who is under 13 or isn't mature enough. Contacts require a lot of care and cleaning. If religious cleaning is not done properly or long enough, you may end up with serious eye infections. if you don't practice how to put them in well enough, you may end of with an eye injury. So be sure that age or maturity level is there. If you are in an older age bracket(50 and above), you have to ask yourself if your hand co-ordination is good enough to handle the contact lens. This is because the contact lens are very small and flimsy. If co-ordination is not in place then you could risk injuring yourself or loosing the contact lens.

2. Your Prescription(rx)- Is your prescription low or high? If you have a low rx, then you might not need contacts. Not all companies make contacts for super low rx's. If you have a high prescription, then contacts are definitely the way to go. This will save you on cosmetic appearance from thick rimmed glasses and the weight of them. Not all contact lens companies make their rx to a really high power, so if you are 12 diopters or more you may want to try hard contact lenses also know as RGP's.

3. Your tear level- If you currently have dry eyes, rub your eyes alot or have to use eye drops to keep them lubricated, contacts might not be the right choice for you. Contacts will dry out your eyes even more if you currently experience dry eyes. Choose contact lenses with a But there are new contact lenses out there that allow your eyes to breathe better. Check with your doctor on what material may be suitable for you. As you age, your tear level will decrease, so there is no way of around that except for using alot of eye drops. Try using eye drops without any preservatives like Larmabak. Any eye drops with preservatives will make you dependent on them in the future.

4. Your patience level- Learning how to wear contacts takes time. Not everyone is accustomed to touching their eye with their finger. If you have a fear of that, then contacts might not be suitable for you. Depending on how quick you learn
